    A Nutritional and Metabolic Snapshot

Organic acids are acidic byproducts of cellular metabolism that are produced by living organisms—including humans, bacteria, and fungi—and are typically excreted in urine. These compounds are the downstream products of various metabolic pathways, such as microbial activity, energy production, detoxification, neurotransmitter synthesis, and nutrient metabolism. When metabolic pathways function efficiently, organic acids are processed and excreted at expected levels. But if enzymatic function is impaired, nutrient cofactors are deficient, or toxins/ microbial byproducts inhibit pathways, these can become blocked, causing abnormal organic acid buildup in urine.
The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive nutritional and metabolic snapshot of an individual’s overall health. The OAT measures 76 organic acids from one easy to collect urine sample.

    • What Patients Might Benefit

Any individual presenting with complex chronic conditions or health concerns – especially where metabolic imbalances and/or toxin exposures are thought to be a causative or contributing factor, or anyone wishing to optimize their health – may benefit from OAT.

The OAT helps bridge the gap between symptoms and metabolic health, guiding practitioners toward personalized interventions.
By identifying patterns of dysfunction across metabolic pathways, organic acid testing supports a functional and integrative approach to patient care, helping individuals better understand their unique biochemistry and optimize their health journey.

The OAT provides insight into six key clinical categories. This allows practitioners to quickly identify patterns of dysfunction across metabolic pathways, organic acid testing supports a functional and integrative approach to patient care, helping individuals better understand their unique biochemistry and optimize their health journey.

Microbial Overgrowth Markers of yeast, mold, bacteria, Clostridium species, and their metabolic byproducts.

Mitochondrial Health Intermediates of glucose, fatty acid, and amino acid metabolism involved in energy production

Neurotransmitter Metabolites Dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine/ epinephrine pathway metabolites, providing insights into neurotransmitter imbalances.

Toxic Exposure Direct and indirect biomarkers reflecting the functional demand for B-vitamins, antioxidants, and other key micronutrients.

Methylation / Detoxification Metabolites reflecting methyl group cycling, glutathione status, and nutrients involved in both methylation and detoxification.

Nutrient Needs Direct and indirect biomarkers reflecting the functional demand for B-vitamins, antioxidants, and other key micronutrients.
