A Metabolic Snapshot

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health. The OAT measures 76 organic acids from one easy to collect urine sample.

Organic acids are products of your body’s metabolism. Evaluation of these downstream metabolites from various metabolic pathways provides immediate functional assessment of important areas related to gut health, mitochondrial dysfunction, neurotransmitter status, indicators of detoxification and a number of organic acids related to macronutrient breakdown and nutritional status. As such organic acid testing can indicate the functional need for essential nutrients, diet modification, antioxidant protection, detoxification, and other therapies.

What Patients Might Benefit OAT

The OAT provides useful information about how well an individual’s body is functioning. If imbalances in function are revealed these imbalances may be contributing to a number of diseases. Addressing these imbalances often improves associated symptoms and supports overall health.

Symptoms and diseases associated with nutritional deficiencies and other metabolic imbalances:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Obesity
  • Insulin resistance
  • Diabetes
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Gastrointestinal dysbiosis
  • Fatigue
  • Optimizing health

About the OAT

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health. The OAT measures 76 organic acids from one easy to collect urine sample.

Organic acids are products of your body’s metabolism. Evaluation of these downstream metabolites from various metabolic pathways assists clinicians in the detection of nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, toxicity, and other imbalances that could be contributing to ill health.
The OAT test report is organized into seven clinically useful categories including:

  • Intestinal Microbial Overgrowth – evaluates for invasive candida, clostridia bacteria toxins, potential mold exposure, and imbalance in the gut microflora
  • Glycolytic and Mitochondrial Metabolites – evaluates for mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Neurotransmitter Metabolites – evaluates for phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan metabolism linked to neurotransmitter status and quinolinic acid production
  • Pyrimidines and Fatty Acids – Evaluates for folate metabolism, as well as fatty acid metabolism problems which can contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Oxalates
  • Nutritional Markers Amino Acid
  • Indicators of Detoxification

The OAT is an essential profile for anyone seeking additional information related to underlying gut derived bacterial and fungal toxins, as well as evaluating for less known metabolic imbalances such as mitochondrial function. It is not a test limited to just a few conditions, but instead may prove insightful for individuals dealing with complex and chronic conditions were metabolic imbalances and/or nutritional deficiencies are contributing factors.
